Then the hands start moving, the body drags itself forward across the boards, the eyes throw red light out of the dark and the noise starts. A prop that only stands there gets looked at; a prop that crawls at you gets talked about until next October.

It is ten inches tall and forty-two inches long (10 in / 42 in), so it reads as something on the floor rather than something standing in the room. That low line is why the jump works: you notice the shape at ankle height late, and by then the hands are already moving and the sound is already going.

Two heads, one crawl. Bald looks like something that came in from the weather; the long hair reads as somebody you know, which is the unsettled version of the two. Whichever head you pick, it moves its hands, crawls forward, glows red out of the eyes and makes the same horrible noises.

Setting it up:

• Step 1: Choose the spot first and sit it flat on the floor where somebody has to step past it to get past you: along a hallway wall, at the foot of the stairs, on the porch just behind the door, or out on the walkway against the grass.

• Step 2: Fit three AA batteries per prop (not included) into the battery compartment on the underside and close it back up. Do this before you put it in place, because the compartment is on the belly side.

• Step 3: Give it a touch to check the whole show while you can still hear it: the hands start moving, the body crawls forward, the eyes light up red and the noise comes with them.

• Step 4: Set it back down and leave it alone - it is triggered by touch, so it waits for the guest, the cat or the person coming down for water at midnight. When the season is over, take the batteries out before it goes into the box for the year.
