The design lives in an app. Open it, tap a picture, and the whole tree changes in a second - Santa becomes a snowflake, the snowflake becomes a reindeer. They animate rather than blink. The snow falls, the sleigh moves down the tree, the star at the peak twinkles, and a brightness slider takes the whole thing from loud and festive to soft enough to sit in front of with the main lights off. There is no ladder and no rewiring involved in changing any of it: one tap, and the tree is dressed differently.

It goes up in under ten minutes with no tools. Hang it, let the coil fall, spread the strands, plug in the controller, connect - the strands are soft and run at low voltage through a USB-C line, they give off no heat, and they fit a tree anywhere from five to twelve feet tall, slim, full or wide. In January it coils back into the same box.

Setting it up:

• Step 1: Hang the star near the peak of the tree and let the coil of strands fall away from it, so the lines come down the front of the tree rather than around the back.

• Step 2: Spread the strands evenly across the face of the tree, front to where the branches start to thin out, and use the zip ties in the box to hold any line where you want it. The strands are pre-assembled, so there is nothing to thread.

• Step 3: Plug the smart controller into the power adapter and the adapter into the wall; the extension cables in the box reach the outlet when the tree stands further from it than you expected.

• Step 4: Open the free app on your phone, connect the controller to Wi-Fi (it runs over Bluetooth too), pick a design and set the brightness. If the first picture is not the one you want, tap another - the tree changes in a second.
