Two standing gnomes at 11.8 in, each in a different style, made the Scandinavian tomte way: a long beard of fiber fur, a soft body in non-woven fabric, and Halloween trimmings on top - a BOO banner on one, bat detailing on the other. They are light enough to sit on a shelf, a mantel or a stair newel without anchoring, and soft enough that a knock from a passing elbow ends with the gnome leaning rather than broken. Two to a set is what makes them work as a pair either side of a door.

Setting it up:

Step 1: Fluff the beard out with your fingers after it comes out of the packaging; shipped compressed, it reads thin for a day until it lifts.
Step 2: Set them where they can be seen from the waist up - the face is under the hat brim, and a low shelf loses it.
Step 3: Keep them off anything that will stain a light pile, and turn them round once a season so the sun-faded side is not the one facing the room.

Care instructions:

Spot clean only: a dab of mild soap on the pile, then a damp cloth, then air dry away from direct heat.
Do not put them in a washer or a dryer - the fabric body holds water and the shaped hat loses its form.
Store them upright or flat with nothing on top; a crease set in fiber fur stays a crease.
